Go to Character Map by clicking start > all programs > accessories > system tools > character map. Selct your font and check the advanced view box. Under "Search For" type star and push enter. Any matches will be displayed for the font you selected. The search will not always work though. In some fonts it will turn up no results even though that font has the character you're looking for. Double-click the star you want and it will appear in the "characters to copy" box. Click the copy button and paste the character where you want. The best one is in the Webdings font. It's the ninteenth character on the seventh row.
Within your computers start menu there is a program that most people have rarely used called Character Map. To find this program Navigate to Start Menu --> All Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> Character Map.
Here you will find all of the fonts installed on your computer. Pick the font that you are using within your document and see if it has the shape you are looking for within the Character Map database. If it isn't there then it is probably a specialist shape. In this instance try scrolling the Character Map font list to either Wingdings/Webdings, these have many commonly used shapes and symbols that people utilise.
Once you have found the shape/symbol/pictograph you are looking for simply double click it and click the button labeled Copy at the bottom of the Character Map screen.
NOTE: You may notice that in the bottom left hand corner there is an array of letters and numbers, these are the hot codes to create these symbols with your keyboard.
For example: Holding Down the ALT key and pressing the number sequence 2255 you get this symbol ╧. Within the font Arial there are shapes like these and many more:
Alt+9733 on Small Number Keyboard to the Right.
