Mine is just a model 900 and it is recoil operated. I am still trying to figure out how to get the charging handle off my Ithaca 900.
Take a screw that will fit tight in the hole in bottom screw it in tight and pull out the plug with a long screwdriver remove the screw

By designer are you asking what Model it is? If so, the Model can be determined by the serial number, which is located on the barrel flats and the forend. You have to take the barrel off the receiver to see them.
Remove the buttplate, shone a light in the hole in the center of the stock. You should see the head of a bolt. Using a socket and an extension, unscrew the stock bolt. Stock should slide off.
Pull pump action back. screw the knurled part at end of stock to loosen it. Remove barrel. Turn knurled part all the way off and plug and spring should come out. Replace spring and replace knurled part. Replace barrel and you're ready.
look on the Side of the recevier there should be a Serial Number on the older Ithaca Model 37 the serial Number was stamped on the receiver by the magazine tune and Barrel . also if you take the barrel off on the bottom of the barrel you'll find the matching serial Number. then look up WWW.SURPLUSRIFLEFORUM.COM in their search engine type in ITHACA 37 DOM match your shotguns Serial number up with their chart .
Your Ithaca Model 72 Deluxe was made between 1974 and 1976. In perfect condition (new, in box, never fired) it is estimated at about $450.
