I am guessing you mean when you escort Gordon out of the forest, and come to the 'confusingly similar' scenery in which you have two choices. Take the bottom one firs, you will come to a place with wild Pokemon. Then take the top, then the bottom again. You will find the Murkrow from earlier mocking you, and must capture a Phanpy to knock it out of a tree. Then, capture it and four Spinarak, and you can escort him out.
