Currently, the only option is to travel by road, either by driving yourself, taxi, or bus. There are plans to create a rail link between the two cities, but it is quite a few years away- construction has not yet begun.
Depending on where in Dubai and where in Abu Dhabi you want to travel between, travel time can vary from 1.5 to 2.5 hours - and of course, you need to allow for (at times) horrendous traffic. It is a straight road - a 5 lane highway, which can be very busy and you should be aware that the driving standards here are erratic - to say the least.
There are plenty of service stations on the highway, and also lots of speed cameras.
Dubai and Abu Dhabi share a border so it is theoretically possible to stand in both countries at once. It's about 90 miles between the downtown areas.
