Ruby, the gemstone, is the red variety of the mineral corundum. Corundum is crystalline aluminum oxide (alumina). Ruby's red color comes from a small amount (a percent or so) of chromium impurity that substitutes for aluminum in the crystal structure. Other impurities give corundum other colors: gem sapphire occurs in a blue variety where the impurities are iron and titanium Naturally occurring ruby crystals formed slowly at high temperature deep in the earth. A rock containing ruby is unmistakably "natural" as the rock texture is not reproducible in the lab. Also diagnostic are small mineral inclusions in natural ruby. "Fake" ruby results from mis-identification of another red mineral, commonly garnet or tourmaline, or of colored silica glass. These mis-identifications are relatively easy to detect making use of physical properties. For instance, ruby is much harder than tourmaline, garnet, or especially glass. As well, fake rubies are often less dense than the real thing. It's easy to do these physical tests. Now comes the hard part: telling natural from synthetic ruby As is the case for diamond, a lot of ruby crystals have been grown (synthesized) in the lab. Growing rubies is by no means easy, but unlike mis-identified ruby, synthetic ruby is no less "real" than natural ruby. It can be extraordinarily difficult to tell the two apart. In the Verneuil synthesis process (used for over a century), rubies are grown by dripping fused alumina onto a plate, where it crystallizes. Characteristically curved growth features--observed with a microscope-- remain in the synthetic single crystal and are tell-tale signs of a synthetic origin. Heat treatment changes the internal features of the crystal making detection of this type of synthetic ruby more difficult. More recently, the appearance and physical properties of ruby crystals grown in a flux can be made to be essentially identical to those of natural ruby. Chemical analysis to detect trace amounts of impurities characteristic of the flux--like lead-- may be the only way to tell natural from synthetic. Usually Real rubies are heavier than the fake one!

What is an imitation gem?

An imitation gem is a man-made or synthetic stone that mimics the appearance of a natural gemstone. These gemstones are typically created in a lab using materials that resemble the properties of the natural stone they are imitating.

How can you determine if glass is borosilicate?

To determine if glass is borosilicate, you can perform a test using a polariscope or a refractometer to measure its refractive index. Borosilicate glass has a higher refractive index compared to regular glass, which can help identify it.

Synthetic pearl real?

If you are asking is synthetic pearl real pearl, the answer is no. The very term synthetic means artificial, man-made. The closest thing is south seas or seashell pearl. the "pearls" are made of crushed shell which is then treated with a resin to stabilize and harden it into a solid mass. This mass can then be shaped, dyed, and polished to resemble real pearl. Most synthetics are painted or enameled glass or something similar. hope this helps. Actually, in terms of gemology the word "synthetic" is not used for pearl. The more appropriate term for it is "imitation". Synthetic word is used for those gemstones which are man-made and possess exact chemical, physical and optical properties that of a real gemstone. Therefore "imitation pearl" should be used instead of "synthetic pearl". And with this (imitation) term being used one can get the answer from itself.

How are gemstones created in a laboratory?

It's a lot cheaper than mining them and synthetic gemstones made in the lab tend to be flawless. Synthetic gemstones are not fake, they are real and are often more beautiful but they are much cheaper to buy. Personally, I only buy synthetic gemstones.

What is a sentence using the word synthetic?

I can give you several sentences.Synthetic cloth is easier to care for than natural fibers.Using synthetic materials often saves natural resources.Almost any substance can be made by synthetic means.

How can one tell if earrings are made from genuine rubies?

Gemology is a vast field where the primary focus is to identify stones correctly. One cannot guarantee whether the stone is real or fake unless one knows properties of gemstone. * Separation of gemstone from man-made glass: Glass exhibits a round to elongated gas bubbles. Gas bubbles are spherical cavity. Sometimes it gets confuse with round crystal fingerprints in natural gemstone. * Separation of gemstone from plastic: Using hot needle point to test the stone will give a peculiar odour and may melt where the hot point is applied.

When did Gemstone Healer happen?

Gemstone Healer is not a specific event or occurrence. It may refer to a person who practices using gemstones or crystals in alternative healing practices.

What does a jeweler do to find out if a diamond is real or not?

A jeweler uses a tester to determine the authenticity of any gemstone. From below, the tester is used to: "...measure the speed of heat traveling through different types of stones." Some also test a diamond by using it to scratch glass, which destroys the glass.

How can one identify a stone?

One can identify a stone by examining its color, texture, hardness, and any unique markings or patterns it may have. Additionally, conducting a scratch test or using a magnifying glass can help determine the type of stone.

What is the difference between natural glass and synthetic glass?

No it is a man made material.Glasses are typically brittle and can be optically transparent. The most familiar type of glass is soda-lime glass, which is composed of about 75% Silicon dioxide (SiO2), sodium oxide (Na2O) from soda ash, lime (CaO), and several minor additives. The term glass is often used to refer only to this specific use

Is a cushion woven or knitted?

It is woven through a force-spinning process using threaded natural plant fibers then knitted artificially through an insulated process involving synthetic glass fibers.

Advantages and disadvantages and uses of synthetic materials?
