What extension is associated with program file?

Program file extensions simply identify the type of program. For example, an executable program will have a file extension of .exe, and some music files will have the file extension of .mp3

Is the last 3 characters that follow the file name that identify the type of program used to create the file?

Yes. If the file ends with .zip, it is a ZIP Archive file. There is a way to change the extension, however, using an extension changer found on the internet. The filename extension (characters to the right of the dot in the file name) identifies the type of file (unless this extension is renamed by a computer user) in most cases. The type of file will identify what can use or open the file, but not necessarily what created the file.

How can you identify a compressed file in windows xp?

You can identify it easily in two ways. 1. By its icon, It is a folder up on its side that has a zip through it. 2. By its file extension. Although sometimes these are not always visible, the extension for the average compressed file is .zip . You could also identify if it a compressed file if it says compressed zip folder in grey writing under the file name.

Why is it a good idea to disable the 'Hide file extensions for known file types' option?

There are good arguments both for and against disabling this option. If file extensions are not shown in explorer, renaming a file will not affect its extension. If an extension is accidentally removed, the file will not invoke the correct application and will not be useable until its extension is reinstated. If you cannot remember the correct file extension, you may not be able to reinstate the file. However, where you are trying to identify a file's extension, having them hidden can cause problems. The only indication of a file extension will be the icon displaying the application that it will be run under. Where you have several file types that run under the same application, it can be difficult to tell one from another without being able to see their file extensions.
