Some televisions have a device called an Integral Sound Switch. This switch can go bad causing the sound to be garbled or not heard at all. The speakers can also be At Fault if the speakers have damage. Installing external speakers can fix this problem in most cases.
Use a stereo receiver and your own speakers. There should be a set of audio output jacks on your TV and you can plug them into the tape in, aux in jacks on your receiver. TV sound is FM and has a very good quality. It's the tiny speakers in the TV and the low powered amplifiers they use that usually deprives you of the best sound.
Then don't forget to go into the AUDIO MENU and select to turn OFF the TV's internal speakers. You don't want to mix the stereos speakers with the tv's speakers.
The projection lamp, from the sound of things.
Be sure to check all of your connections. If the problem presists, you may want to check the menu to make sure your sepakers are turned on: AUDIO>SPEAKERS>ON. If that doesn't fix the sound, you may want to call for 866-965-3842 technical support.
I'm having a little trouble with my HDMI settings. No matter how many cables I use or what I try to change, the TV simply refuses to play the sound. I know it can play sound through the HDMI set up so it's not a matter of the audio being broken (I hope). I had the same issue with an ouya (that has a sort of sound test thing, which was the sound I used to find out if the TV could actually play sound through the HDMI port or not) and an xbox 360 and it's just driving me mad. I don't know just what my TV is but apparently it's a Murphy, it's most likely a 22-24 inch and it only has one HDMI port. Any ideas as to how I can fix this?

TV always came with sound. There was never a "silent" TV. In fact by 1928 movies had sound.
First silent movies had no sound, but tv had always sound from the start.

As for the sound, folks have complained that it's prone to getting really loud, then really quiet, without warning and seemingly without reason. This is caused by the auto volume leveling software in the TV. It's really quite terribly implemented. Turn off AVL/AVS, and this problem should go away".
