You wait until the people in front of you have skied up to a line in the snow and stopped. Once the chair lift swings by for them, follow it slowly, and ski up to the line that shows through the snow (usually accompanied by a lift operator). Stop at the line, and wait for the chair lift to come up behind you. Usually the lift operator will grab it to slow the chair down, and you can then swiftly sit down and pull your ski tips up to make sure they don't dig into the snow. It really is quite simple once you get the hang of it!

Jumping on skis is one of the many joys of skiing. It can be done by beginners just hitting little bump or an expert doing inverted tricks on massive gap jumps. But basically all of them are the same. First of all you need to go by once first to see the landing. When doing the jump there are four thing to focus on; approach, takeoff, maneuver, and landing. At the approach you want to have the right amount of speed, this is some you will just have to feel and will get better at as you get more experience. Generally though you will need more speed than expected. having said that, it's still important to start slow. When controlling your speed coming in to the jump its much easier to slow down then it is to speed up. When slowing down the basic technique is a speed check, this is just a short little turn to slow you down a bit. Its kind of like a fish tail, you just kick out the back end of your skis a bit, the more you do it the more you will slow down. Then When you go off the jump(the takeoff) it's important to pop (push off). This will give you more height and distance, but more importantly it will give you more stability. Without popping it's very hard to execute a clean jump. The pop should take place right as the tips of you BINDINGS go off the lip of the jump. the pop should be a quick sharp movement. Another important thing while taking off is to keep your center of balance forward. This does not mean lean forward from above you hips, it means keep your whole body in a fairly straight line with your legs and body forward. (unless doing an inverted jump, then this is all different.) It is especially important to remain forward when doing a trick like a 360. You axes need to be forward. Now the maneuver is the cool part. You can do all sorts of things. But the important thing is make sure you have plenty of time to spot your landing. DON'T FREAK OUT WHEN YOU ARE IN THE AIR OR YOU WILL CRASH. Then the landing, this can make or break the jump. But if you have put yourself in the right position so far you will find it quite easy. Just bend your knees and land as if you where landing on the ground in shoes. Except don't try to land on your toes.

More generally when finding a jump (for beginners) don't pick one with too steep of a take off. It will pitch you backward more and make it hard to land. Further more when picking jump look at the landing if it's flat it may look easier, but it will jolt you hard when landing. A nice smooth DOWN-SLOPING land is much, much eaier and wont hurt. Another important, important thing is knowing how to fall. If you are falling back NEVER put your hands back behind you like a skateboarder. This is how people break wrists and dislocate shoulders. The best thing to do is have your legs hit first and then sprawl out at absorb the impact with not just one place on your body.

The best way to jump is when your confident.

At each end of the lift there is a large wheel (known as a bull-wheel) that the chairs connected to the continuous cable turn around on. One of these wheels, usually the one on the bottom, is turned by a large motor that pulls the cable down and consequently turning the cable and chairs from top to bottom and around again.

There are also detachable lifts that disconnect from the cable at the top and bottom by a small latch. These are good, as they mean that the travel time can be quicker (more passengers taken, and less time spent on), and the loading can be slower then on non-detachable.

This is also the case with gondolas. Surface lifts are the same, except these probably won't be detachable.

On commercial ski slopes, they are taken up by a ski lift. This may be a chair lift, a cable car, or a simple powered moving rope that you hold while you are drawn up the slope (on skis)
