I tried a fake aligator - didn't work Tried a fake heron - didn't work Black plastic bird fruit netting sold by Lowe's stetched over the top of the pond has worked!!!! Another suggesting is to string fishing line around the pond and over the surface of the pond to trip the heron up but this needs to be in additional to the netting.
Quit raising fish outside. OR provide the Heron with a pond with cheap feeder fish or something they might like better. It doesn't have to be fancy...just more visible than your Koi pond or whatever you are feeding.
Raccoons will start visiting at night.
As long as you keep putting food out, wild life will keep coming. Stop and they'll move on. Do something everyone can live with and everybody wins. Do some homework. Find out what herons prefer as far as fish, habitat etc and provide it. I promise it will enrich your life as these are interesting birds. Unlike Koi and other exotic fish, these beautiful birds are native to the United States and are protected by law.
Hi I had this problem - they got away with some quite large fish - so I put a fruit net over the pond and anchored it taut as heron wont stand on it with large rocks all around. Put in plenty of floating plants also so fish can hide.
You're not alone! Many other infuriated gardeners have the dilemma of keeping these resourceful and calculating bird
tadpoles
Babies that come from blue herons
Babies that come from blue herons
they say fuzzy stuff and kick the water
Put chicken wire over the top of the pond, or get a noisy dog..Herons cannot stand the racket.
Herons can decimate pond animal populations.
Great blue herons are grayish blue and have a thick dark caplike marking on their heads while white herons are completely white.
Bass, water snakes, turtles, herons.
Herons eat fish.
Cat tails, blue gill fish, lady great blue herons and stuff like that
