If it is balanced then the mass (amount) of elements on each side of the arrow will be equal.
count the number of molecules of each element on each side of the equation. they need to all be equal.

An example:

H2 + O2 -> H2O2

There are two H's on the left hand side and two on the right hand side, so the H's are balanced.

The same is for the O's.

==> The equation is balanced

And remember that the arrow is a yield sign in an equation.

You know when a chemical equation is balanced when both sides have the same number of atons. Example: Mg+O2>MgO this changes to 2Mg+O2>2MgO (there is 2 magnesiums on both sides and 2 oxygen. since they are both equal then the equation is balance :)
