Well, you can tell if it is alive if you go to a dark place and shine a light at the egg, if you see a red dot or other bird like featers then the egg is most likely fertil and will prodouce bird if heated a 75 degrees
I have heard the best way to attempt to ensure the survival is by placing the egg in a soft little box inside a larger shoe box. poke holes which is important for survival. Also, place a light bulb in order to keep a constant 100 degrees which is the incubation temperature. Furthermore, keep a wet cloth in there to create the needed humidity important to the eggs development. But even then, the best thing to do is to leave it where it is when you have found it and except it, I know its difficult but that's the way it is..
Sometimes, u can tell if it is super fat, like, SUPER fat. And it sits on its nest all day/ most of the time.
