how you know if a star fish is is alive is some star fish may be red because that is their natural color. When they are picked up they will move or also curl their armes in and out because of lack of oxygen.

Also, the mesoglea (the "jelly") is properly transparent when the animals are healthy. As their health deteriorates, the mesoglea gets more opaque.

When they're properly dead, they fall apart.
