most dryer cords are flat and the connection on the dryer is split or the ground wire connection will be at a different height. The cord probably has black, red, and white wire. Black and red are hot and white is ground. It does not matter black and red or red and black, they are both hot. If the dryer is not marked it will be layed out so that the ground will be the center of the connection.

I have a three wire cord with a three prong plug on the end sometime called a pigtail. I see the center wire is green which goes on green but which of the other wires goes on black and which goes on white? These wires are not color coded but the exterior cover has one wire which is ribbed and the other is smooth.

For USA, Canada and countries running a 60 Hz supply service. It is a very good idea to change a three prong appliance to work on a four prong socket outlet because the four-prong design is a much safer electrical system, but you should not be thinking of doing it yourself unless you have been trained how to work safely on electrical power services. The fact that you have asked this question here means that you may not have the necessary experience.>Dryer or range plug three to fourYes this is possible and for safety's sake highly recommended. Answer for USA, Canada and countries running a 60 Hz supply service. The 4th wire is for the ground. Many of the older houses used the ground wire and the neutral wire interchangeably, however the neutral voltage can "float, depending on what else is drawing power from the circuit. Modern 240 V circuits have the 2 "hot" wires carrying the 240, the Neutral wire (typically white) is the "center tap" of the supply transformer, and the ground wire is there to make certain that YOU, or any other operator of the dryer, will not be electrocuted. So run a GROUND wire to the 4th prong of the replacement plug that you bought at Wal~Mart, or better yet, have a licensed electrical contractor do it for you.>Dryer plug three to fourFirst of all turn the breaker off that feeds the dryer. You can purchase a replacement cord at Home Depot or others. On the back of the appliance, where the cord enters, there should be an access door. Open the door and make note of which color wire is attached to each terminal. A great help would be to use a marker to denote black, red, white, green. Once you have identified which wire goes where, you can remove the existing cord. The new 3 wire cord will be grey and flat, as opposed to black and round. The two outside wires of the 3 wire cord are larger in diameter than the center wire. These are the line wires, and are the same as the black and red wires from the old cord. Connect these to those terminals. It does not matter which is which. The center wire should go to where the green wire was.

The type of receptacle that you should install is a 14-30R. It is a three pole four wire grounding receptacle. The black wire goes to the Y terminal, the red wire goes to the X terminal, the white wire goes to the W terminal, the ground wire if there is one goes to the G terminal. This type of receptacle requires a four wire cable and plug to connect to your dryer. This configuration conforms to the new electrical code rules for new installations. The connections at the dryer will be, outside of the three terminals connect to the "hot" wires and the center terminal connects to the center terminal. The green wire on the dryer cord connects to the chassis of the dryer. In some cable kits a ground lug is supplied for this connection to the ground.

Go to any hardware or appliance store and purchase a 4 prong to 3 prong adapter. There is no adaptor available for this , you must change the cord set on the stove to a three wire cord. Remove the cover over the terminal housing. note the way the terminals are laid out and the way the wires are landed on them. Remove the wires from the terminals and the cord from the connector. Install the three wire cord and land the black and red wires back to the terminals. The white wire goes back to its' respective terminal, but you must also ground the stove chassis to this terminal with a bonding strap. This strap will go from the white wire terminal to where the green wire was landed in the four wire cord. This strap usually will come with a new stove, it is flat, made of copper with a hole in each end, if you do not have one, make it out of # 10 bare copper wire. Your stove manual may also explain how to do this.

If you have black, white and bare wires going to the box where the outlet is mounted you just need to replace the 2 prong outlet with a three prong one. Black goes to copper colored screw, white to silver colored screw and bare wire to green screw.
