Ferret can tolerate cold temperatures very well, they normally don't get cold. Ideal temperature for a ferret is about 60 - 70 degrees Fahrenheit. When a ferret sleeps, it's body naturally lowers their temperature, so upon waking they will shiver to warm up, but it doesn't mean that it's cold. Also a ferret will shiver when frightened. They have poorly developed sweat glands and cannot tolerate temperatures above 85 degrees Fahrenheit.
Ferrets shiver for many reasons but the most common reason is due to body temperature. When a ferret is cold it shivers the same way humans do. Some ferrets shiver when they wake up because during a very deep sleep their body temperature will drop.
Shivering can also be a sign of illness in your ferret. If you notice that he or she is shivering a lot or more than they used to, it would be advisable to take the ferret to the vet to make sure it isn't anything serious.
Ferrets normal temperature is 103 F (range 101 - 103). A ferret's temperature is done rectally. Refer to link below for procedures.
advice from another contributor:
If your worried about your ferrets health, take it to a vet as these small animals can die very quickly.
Most often, rabbits don't get cold. They tolerate cold weather very well. In fact, they become most active and playful if the outside temperature is around 32oF. You can get a good reading about your rabbit's body temperature by feeling their ears. If the rabbit is extremely hot, they will be releasing heat like crazy. If they the rabbit is cold, the ears will be frigged. Keep in mind, just because your hands are cold does not mean the ears are cold!
Ferret shiver or tremble because:
* When ferrets sleep, their body temperature lowers, upon awakening they shiver or tremble to warm up * Ferrets shiver or tremble when excited * Ferrets shiver or tremble when scared, but rarely. * Ferrets do not shiver or tremble from being cold, the ideal temperature they like to be kept in is from 60 - 70 degrees Fahrenheit
Unless you are a licensed breeder, your ferrets shouldn't be able to go into heat in the first place. It's illegal to sell ferrets that aren't fixed in most places.
If you see your ferret shivering, maybe its too cold for them.
