How do you learn addition in maths?

Usually using items such as fruit ie: 2 strawberries + 2 strawberries = 4 strawberries. Exaggerating the movement from 2 piles of 2 strawberries to one pile of 4 strawberries.

1. In first grade I learned addition with bottlecap counters. However this is limited to small numbers and is slow, but gives the concept.
2. In second grade I learned addition by memorizing the addition tables and carrying.
3. Recently I learned left to right addition and several other speed adding methods from a 1930s book I found in a used book store. But these were never taught in school.
