luck doesn't have much to do with it. unless you are "lucky" enough to have someone nearby to save your silly self.

watch how they do it
get used to the water - in the shallow end of the pool
go under the water - learn to hold your breath
learn to float on your back - or tread water if you sink
try dog-paddle
breast-stroke
back-stoke
side-stoke
free style-stroke
have fun
Go to a lake and go as deep as you can.
