And don't just go over the lines so you know them 'by heart' in your head. You have to speak the lines out loud even when you are alone (yes, your family will think you have lost it). While you're doing that, stand up, move around. Make connections between what your body is doing and what your mouth is saying. Mix it up; say the lines as if you are in a slapstick comedy, then say them as if they're causing you enough grief to die. Say them as if you're manic; say them as if you are depressed. Say them as if you are making love. Then make believe you're a character from CSI. Pretend you are Bette Davis or Marlene Dietrich, and then as if you are John Wayne or Marlon Brando. It will feel absurd, it will look absurd. But when the director asks you to try something a little different during rehearsals, you won't be thrown for a loop. In fact, your fluidity and good humor will probably make a hit with the director and other cast members. Have fun, but don't waste other people's time. You learn lines in context, and if you are used to delivering lines only one way, then a slight change will throw your memory off. And for heaven's sake, learn the lines as if they are natural speech, not as if you are reading them for the first time from a defective prompter.
