Cut out 64 small squares (1 to 1.5 inches), 32 red and 32 black, and paste them in alternating colors onto a board so that you have 8 squares by 8 squares.

Or, take a square board that is already red or black, and use 32 squares of the other color, again producing a grid that is 8 squares by 8 squares.
