Either go to the Nether, obtain Netherrack and put it in the fire spot. Then get flint and an iron ingot and put them together like this *_

Then right click the Flint n' Steel and it will stay on fire.
On older versions it would work with a Log.
To make a Flint and Steel, take one Flint and one Iron Ingot and place them anywhere in your inventory crafting space or on the Crafting Table. (Since it's a shapeless craft) It'll fuse together to become one item. Flint and Steel can start fires by right clicking on the block you are targeting.
