In most cases, the possessive is formed by adding the apostrophe after the 's' at the end of the word, for example cats becomes cats' or parents becomes parents'.

An exception to this rule is irregular plurals that don't have the 's' at the end of the word, you add the apostrophe 's', for example children becomes children's or mice becomes mice's.

The most common method to make a noun into a plural noun is to add -s or -es to the end of the word; some nouns, called irregular plurals, use a variety of other forms.

To form the possessive for any noun, singular or plural, add an 's to the end of the word; or, if the word already ends with an -s, the apostrophe is added after the ending -s. Some examples:

Singular / regular plural / possessive plural

house / houses / houses'

boy / boys / boys'

dish / dishes / dishes'

box / boxes / boxes'

Singular / irregular plural / possessive plural

man / men / men's

baby / babies / babies'

tooth / teeth / teeth's

mouse / mice / mice's
