How can one learn how to write a story?

Read, read, read, read, read, read, and keep reading. When you're ready to come to the plate and start writing, you either have it or you don't. If you find that you don't have it, you will still be one bright individual for having read all those darn books.

Besides reading, create a writing habit. Most authors make a habit of writing for several hours a day, setting a quota of 1500 or more words a day. You may toss some of it, but writing practice pays off. One of the best books I've read on the subject is On Writing by Stephen King.

I tend to think of whatever it is I may be writing about draw up a rough draft, then go back rewrite it a second time then do my own editing. But it takes a lot of skill, imagination and good grammar and a very large vocabulary doesn't hurt neither!

Furthermore I cannot stress enough about covering all of your basis, research is an absolute must, otherwise you merely make yourself appear very foolish to others.
