Electricity is the motion of electrons. The electrons of certain substances, particularly metals, are easier to move from one atom to another, and are onsidered good conductors. In order to get the electrons to move (you know make the electricity) you need to apply some impetus to get the electons to do this. This is usually in the form of a magnet force. The movement of the magnet in relation to the metal will cause the already easily displaced electrons to begin moving from one atom to another. If one were to go to a hydroelectric power plant, (think of an excample) you would see that the falling water is used to turn a turbine. The turnbine is attached to a rotor. The rotor is the device that produces a rotating magnetic field. The magnet field induces movement of electrons in the surrounding stator, which is a set of electrical conductors (wires) wound around an iron core.

There are many different ways to get the rotor to move in relationship to the stator. This can take place with wind power where the moving fan provides the circular motion. this can be done in a nuclear power plant which basically uses the power of nuclear fusion to create heat to boil water to produce steam which turns the turbines, of the electrical generator. Basically, that is how it is produced, by moving a magnet in relationship to an electric conductor.
