How do you punish a puppy if he does something wrong?

This is going to vary from dog to dog. Some dogs are softer, and some are harder headed. Use the least amount of force necessary. Correct a dog only DURING the offensive act, never after. For example, if you come home and find your dog has pooped on the floor, there is no point in disciplining him. Just clean it up. Punishment more than a second after the act will not be associated with the act, even if you shove his nose in it. All you teach in that case is that, from the dog's point of view, you are mentally unbalanced and untrustworthy.

If your dog has a repeating problem, the first line of defense is to prevent that problem from occurring. For example, a dog that is not reliable with toilet training should be contained when you are not able to supervise him. When he is out of his crate or pen, he should be kept in the same room with you and you should watch closely so you can interrupt if he tries to squat or lift a leg.

When the dog is performing the offensive act, say, "NO!" sharply. Do not say it in anger. Your intent is to surprise him and hopefully interrupt him from the offending act. If he was or is mid stream/poop, scoop him up and hustle him out the door to finish. As hard as it may be for you, reward him for finishing outside. A dog will not understand that the problem is where he poops, not that he poops, unless you make it clear by praising in the right place and interrupting in the wrong place.
