Usually on the bottom left corner of the screen (next to the "start" button) the is an icon "Show Desktop".
This is partially true but actually this doesn't minimize windows, it just hides them. There is not button for this but the keyboard shortcut is windows key + M and to reverse it the shortcut is windows key + shift + M
To minimize all windows, press the Windows Key + m. Another method that creates the same effect is pressing of Windows Key + d which is actually a shortcut to desktop but has the same effect.

On the keyboard, for windows systems, you press the indows key (has the windows symbol on it) and the letter 'D'. This should minimize all windows and show the desktop. Alternatively, you could press the windows key and then select all the programs/windows from the taskbar itself.
[windows key] + [D] - will minimize all the windows and show your desktop. Pressing it again will bring the windows back up. Note: You have to press the keys at the same time. If you're having trouble, hold down the windows key, and keep it depressed, and tap the [D] key.
If you are in Windows 7, you can click (on the start bar) the box on the left of it. If you are in Windows XP or lower, click the icon on the Quick Launch Bar that has a message on it stating "Show Desktop"

I have found a method using X Windows Dock, but I don't like the look of that dock!!
