51*49 = -I*LI + L*LI = -LI+MMDL = IMMD (-1+2500 = 2499)

Note that in today's terms 49 and 2499 are written out in Roman numerals as XLIX and MMCDXCIX respectively but the Romans themselves would have probably wrote them out as IL (-1+50 = 49) and IMMD (-1+2500 = 2499)

Check: 51*49 = 2499

How would you add together 49 and 51 in two different ways entirely in Roman numerals?

XXXXVIIII + XXXXXI = C orXXXXVIIII + LI = C orXLIX + LI = C (probably the more correct of the versions)Another Answer:-Under todays modern rules governing the Roman numeral system nowaydays we would convert 49 into Roman numerals as XLIX but there is evidence to suggest that the ancient Romans would have added together the equivalent of 49 and 51 in either of the following formats:-A: XXXXVIIII+LI = C => 49+51 = 100B: IL+LI = C => (50-1)+51 = 100QED

How would you add together 51 plus 49 in two different ways and 51 minus 49 in two different ways showing all four calculations in Roman numerals?

The modern way of expressing the equivalent of 49 into Roman numerals is XLIX but the ancient Romans would have probably expressed it as IL or XXXXVIIII thus facilitating the speed and ease of the above calculations respectively as follows:- A: LI+IL = C => 51+(50-1) = 100. B: LI+XXXXVIIII = C => 51+49 = 100. C: LI-IL = II => 51-(50-1) = 2. D: LI-XXXXVIIII = II => 51-49 = 2.
