Cleaning a carpet spot for both smell and stain, tanic acid works but will smell for several days (it's available over the counter through pet supply outlets). Clean first with a heavy duty / high traffic carpet cleaner, apply the tanic acid treatment, rinse liberally (soak) with clear water, and vacuum thoroughly with wet/dry vac.
Grass stains or discoloration: By the time you see the damage it's already done. Rake it (hard) clear and over seed. Females produce more acidic urine and you can search on line for product that will reduce or neutralize acidity (I've found the products moderately successful, at best, and they require daily dosing the dog. Usually a waste of time/money/effort. Just rake hard, flush, and over seed.
If you catch it immediately, for lawns (especially blue grass and mixes) flush the effected area with 2-5 gallons of water. Again, just prep and over seed if it starts changing color (yellowing).
This is the heavy duty fix for large breed working dogs like German Shepherds. Often, nothing is required for small breed dogs.
Try from the easiest (soaking with water for lawns) to reseeding, especially with smaller breeds.
I routinely train with 18 - 25 working dogs and after 30+ years, including commercial cleaning, this is the best I've found. If you find a better solution, please drop me a note.
