It would depend on what kind of memory you are talking about.

If you are talking about Hard Drive Space:

  • On a Windows XP Machine
  • ** Open up My Computer
    • Right click the drive in question
    • Click Properties
    • You will be presented with a graphical representation of how much space is remaining
  • On a Windows Vista Machine
  • ** Open up Computer
    • Look for the drive in question
    • There should be a little bar below the hard drive. This represents how much space you have left. The drive should have information about how many gigabytes is remaining, depending on your configuration
  • On a Apple Computer running Mac OS X Leopard
  • ** "Get Info" method
    • *** Go to your desktop
      • Right click or long-click on the hard drive in question
      • Click "Get Info"
      • You will be presented with information, including remaining space, about your hard drive
    • Finder method
    • *** Open a finder window, such as applications
      • The remaining hard drive space should be at the bottom of the window

If you are talking about RAM (Random Access Memory):

  • On a Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 Machine
  • ** Open the Start Menu
    • Right click My Computer
    • Click Properties
    • The RAM will be displayed in the window
  • On a Apple Computer running Mac OS X
  • ** Click the Apple menu
  • Click About This Mac
  • Your RAM is represented under Memory

Start your computer and locate the My Computer icon.

Right-click the My Computer icon, and select Properties from the menu that appears.

Look under the General tab where it gives you information about the size of the hard drive and what operating system you use to find the amount of RAM in megabytes (MB) or Gigabytes (GB).

The memory on the computer can be checked by the system bios while booting, but a better thest is to use a program like memtest86+. This program is used on a bootcd so the memory can be tested before the operating system is started up.

Check the bar in add or remove programs, compare it to the total system memory from when you bought your computer, and do the math. Or at least that's how I THINK you do it...
