How do you know you made a paragraph?

A paragraph is a group of sentences about the same subject.

Here are some places to begin a new sentence:

• when you change from one subject to another one
• when you change setting
• when you change time
• when you change speakers
• for emphasis if you have a very important bit of information that you want to make stand out on the page

Each sentence in your paragraph should have a role or job in the paragraph in order to be an organized paragraph.

Check to be sure that each sentence is either:

• your topic sentence, stating your main idea or the claim you are making
• giving a fact or example of your topic as a supporting sentence
  
• explaining how that fact or example supports the topic
• acting as a transitional sentence into the next sentence

Here are some other points to remember when organizing your thoughts into a paragraph:

• a fact can be proven; a claim or hypothesis is just an idea
• avoid having a paragraph with a lot of claims that you cannot support by using facts
• avoid having a paragraph with a lot of extra facts that do not have anything to do with your topic
• to help you determine if your paragraph supports the topic, phrase your topic sentence as a question (do this step in your head, not actually on paper) and check each sentence to be sure it helps to answer that question
