We protect iron from rusting by

  • By converting iron to stainless steel. Stainless steel is the mixture of iron with carbon and other elements such as chromium. Good quality of curtley is made of stainless steel.
  • Galvanising: coating iron with zinc. The iron object is dipped into molten zinc, then removed. On cooling thin layer of zinc is deposed on the object. Gates are made of galvanised iron.
  • Coating it with tin. This process is used to make food cans.
  • Painting it with suitable paints. Iron bridges have to be painted regularly. Can you explain why water paint is not suitable? Because water paint will enhance rusting.
  • Greasing it. Can parts are greased.
  • Oiling it.
  • Coating it with plastic.

coat the iron with an inert layer such as oil or plastic. you could also react it with another nonmetal such as sulphur to make sure it does not react with the oxygen in the air to form iron oxide (rust). You can also paint the iron to stop rusting.
Painting, Galvanization and plastic coating are the most common methods for protecting iron from rust.

Paint it, coat oil cover it or add a coat of molten zinc or tin pieces. In addition keeping the object in a moisture free dry room or keep in a box containing dehydrating agents like anhydrous CaCl2,anhydrous Coit pper Sulfate, etc. More advance methods include using impressed current cathodic protection.

Rusting is a process by which iron in a material combines with oxygen atoms to form iron oxide. One can prevent rust by any means which prevents this reaction from occurring.

Probably the most common form of rust prevention is applying a coat of paint to the iron object to prevent oxygen from the atmosphere from coming into contact with the iron in the object.

Iron and many steels( alloys of iron) rust. There are many ways you can prevent iron from rusting. Most involve coating the metal with something to keep out of air and water. Below are some of the examples.

1. Painting

2.Greasing

3. Plastic coating.

4. Galvanizing.

5. Sacrificial protection.

Lead tetraoxide is most often used as a pigment for primer paints for iron objects. Due to its toxicity, its use is being limited. In the past, it was used in combination with linseed oil as a thick, long-lasting anti-corrosive paint. The combination of minium and linen fibres was also used for plumbing, now replaced with PTFE tape. Currently it is mostly used for manufacture of glass, especially lead glass. It finds limited use in some amateur pyrotechnics as a relatively potent oxidizer.

Red lead was also used for engineer's scraping, before being supplanted by Engineer's blue. In traditional Chinese medicine, red lead is used to treat ringworms and ulcerations, though the practice is limited due to its toxicity. Also, azarcon, a Mexican folk remedy for gastrointestinal disorders contains up to 95% lead tetroxide.

The questioner actually wanted to know how to protect iron from corrosion! Yes, paint will protect it for a time depending on environmental conditions, and the quality of the paint and painting. You can also plate iron and steel with zinc, by hot-dip galvanising or by cold plating. (Ccadmium was used extensively in the past but has been phases out due to its high toxicity.) Oils and greases offer at least temporary protection.

Can iron bars be painted in order to stop rust when concreted?

No, after painting iron can not make a strong bonding with concrete, the purpose of painting is the prevention of rusting but rusting process occurs in presence of carbon dioxide and moisture, when iron bars are sealed in concrete the rusting is not possible.
