Chimpanzees inhabit several regions of Africa. Three of the subspecies, Pan troglodytes vellerosus (the Nigeria-Cameroon Chimpanzee), Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii (the Eastern Chimpanzee), and Pan troglodytes troglodytes (the Central Chimpanzee) live in central Africa. A fourth subspecies, Pan troglodytes verus (the Western Chimpanzee), inhabits western Africa. They live mainly in jungles, feeding on plants and insects.
There are currently three subspecies of chimpanzees: Pan troglodytes troglodytes, Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii, and Pan troglodytes verus. The bonobo, Pan paniscus, is not a kind of chimpanzee.They are ALL endangered, according to the IUCN Red List for 2008. The most recent estimate of total population size is 172,700 to 299,700 (Butynski 2003)
