It's wise to keep your knives out of the dish washer. Its always best to hand wash your knives. You can wash with regular dish soap and when you are finished washing it its best to dry it off completely before putting it away.

Wash the knife very carefully being careful not to cut yourself. Use warm soapy water, rinse well, sanitize if in a food service setting, and dry thoroughly.

At home, I wash my knives immediately upon completion of the task at hand, then I dry them with a towel and put them away. The acids from food can dull the edge if not cleaned off. Fresh food debris is easier to clean off than dried on food. I also store the knives in their sheaths. If a knife doesn't have a sheath, I make some with clean paperboard (length of blade and 3x the blade width. Fold it around blade to shape, remove from blade and use school glue to secure the sheath's shape. Put a weight on it - like a phone book - and wait an hour or so.) Sheaths make a drawer of knives safer and the blade edges don't get banged up so they stay sharp longer.

Something I learned from a cutlery salesman - if you use a block to store your knives and the slots are vertical, insert the knife with the edge facing up. That helps the knife retain sharpness.

Dish soap and water will remove any remaining lubricants and grit, but a soft brush (an old tooth brush) might be helpful in cleaning a sharp angle where the bolster meets the blade.
