Vauxhall cars have a lock on the reverse, lift the ring under the gearknob before attempting to select reverse or it will go into 1st.

It is not uncommon for the switch fitted in the gearbox to fail, resulting in the reversing lights not working when reverse is selected. This fault is common to all cars, not just Vauxhall ones. It can be simple to test (of you know what you are doing) by umplugging the wires from the switch and connecting them (two wires) together using a bent paper clip. If the lights now work the switch is faulty.
