The most commonly used way is to purchase an Action Replay. They should cost about $20 or less. Usually they come pre-loaded with cheats for the latest games, but some are older and you may want to update the codes yourself. The AR comes with instructions on how to update the cheats stored on it using your computer, or you can manually enter codes onto the AR using your DS, but it is a lot more work.

You must buy a DS DLDI (aka "hack pack") such as; R4, R4i, Edge, AceKard, M3, an so on. These do many more things besides let you cheat on a game. They run around $40 depending on which one you get and where you get it. These packs usually use SD cards to store game ROMs (copies of the game in a data file). Most of them will allow you to use cheats. You can select the ones you want depending on how the instructions tell you. They are usually very simple for using cheats and most people would be able to figure it out on their own. To update your cheat list on your DLDI, you can usually use a wi-fi update, which, when started, will download all the latest cheats from the designer's website onto your hack pack.
