How do you install a portable air conditioner?

Luckily, installing a portable air conditioner is easy. The first thing you want to do is unpack the unit. I recommend reviewing the installation instructions before getting started in case there are any unusual issues with the model you are installing. Next, I like to install the window kit. Take the sliding plastic window pieces and put them together. Temporarily place the window kit in the open window and extend until it fits the window. Check to see if the holes(s) for the hose fittings are clear. You will need to trim the inside sliding plastic piece if the inside sliding piece is even partially blocking the hose fitting openings. Once you are sure of the fit, install the screws to lock down the length adjustment. Install the strip insulation to both sides of the window kit, install the hose fittings and hoses. Slide the window shut and install 1" doweling cut to length to ensure that the window can't be opened from the outside.

Then place the air conditioner close to the window and connect the hoses so that there are no sharp bends in the hose. I recommend wrapping the exhaust hose with something similar to a cut-down hot water heater insulation blanket.

Now check to see that all of the condensate tank drain caps are tight to avoid any leakage. Install any external condensate tanks. Plug the electrical cord to the nearest outlet. If an extension cord is required, use the shortest one portable. It needs to be a three prong, grounded cord and made from 12 Gauge wire.

Portable air conditioners do not always require a window, which can be helpful for those in apartments with rules and regulations against objects in the window. They can also be vented out through the door and even through the roof. All you need to make sure of is that you have a way to seal of the area minus the exhaust pipe. Ceilings with removable tiles work very well, as do doors with small doggie doors that make sealing off easy. Use the same process as mentioned above with a window.
