If you have the Detroit motor, you can read the fault codes off the dash. Call them in to any Freightliner dealer or Detroit Diesel mechanic, and they can tell you what those codes are. If you have the MBE4000, Cummins, or Caterpillar motors, you'll need to have the computer hooked up to read off the codes.
In order to find instructions on how to read the fault codes of a 2000 Freightliner FLD 112 with a C12 engine you should go to heavydutypowertrain.com where they have an extensive selection of instructional material including how-to videos.
You should get these codes flashed at you when you sit with the motor off, and the key in the 'ACC' position. You hold up the cruise control button until the codes start flashing at you - yellow for minor faults, red for major faults. Call any Freightliner/Sterling/Western Star dealership, or any diesel repair shop certified to work on Detroit Diesel motors, and they can tell you exactly what your fault codes mean.

Hook up a laptop with the appropriate software to read Cat fault codes.
Turn on the switch, and hold the override switch. Count the number of flashes for the first number of fault, then wait for a pause in the flash, then count the number of flashes for the second digit in the fault. Count the number of flashes until it cycles back around. Examples of codes would be 2 yellow or red flashes, then a pause, then 5 yellow or red flashes then a pause would be a code 25
You have to take it to a truck repair shot or dealership. The fault codes can only be read with software and a special adapter to link up to a computer.
you need to have the check engine/service engine soon fault codes read to determine what the fault is.
You get the software for the engine (e.g., DDEC for Detroit, Insite for Cummins, and I'm drawing a blank remembering what it is for Cat) and a diagnostic connector (such as NexIQ or Inline for Cummins), pull up the fault codes, and reset them. Now, if it's something which is going to be recurring, those codes will come back until you repair the fault (if they clear at all).
You need a scan tool to read fault codes.
Because there's an intermittent issue which needs to be addressed. You need to have the DTCs (fault codes) read to find out which codes you have, what your active codes are, what your inactive codes are, and how many counts of each fault you have.
