The simple, low quality, way to record voice on a Mac, is to use QuickTime Player.

The current version is version 10.2

In that version, under the "File" menu you will see "New Movie Recording," "New Movie Recording." and "New Screen Recording."

By selecting "New Audio Recording," you will get a recording control panel which is linked to the Mac's internal microphone. To make a recording, click the red button.

QT will record what is picked up by the internal microphone. To stop the recording, click the button again, which now contains a black square. The player appears, with the common controls. Click the triangular "Play" button to hear your recording. It is not yet saved. If you like it you can save it. If you don't like it you can change the microphone input in the System Preferences panel, and try again.

To create professional sounding recordings, you will need to purchase a USB sound input device and an external microphone.

QT version 10.2 has some editing functions. A version with better or easier editing functions is QuickTime version 7.6.6. Pro. It is available from Apple.
