Most silver is obtained from refining other metals. It's extracted through a flotation process. Then the silver itself is refined through smelting.
No silver solder can melt
You can't because part of the coin is from another material, if you melt out the silver you are still left with the other material. So the coin is made from 90% silver 10% something else.
I use 70% strength Nitric. You will need low heat to get the reaction going. Brown fumes will appear. YOU MUST NOT BREATH THESE! Place the silver-containing object into the acid and wait until it dissolves. Let the acid cool down. Place a copper bar into the acid. Don't use wire or sheet as pieces will break off and fall to the bottom of the container. You will see a carpet of Silver forming on the copper bar. Give the bar a shake every now and then. It wll fall to the bottom. Leave it for 24 hours. The spongy carpet left at the bottom is your silver. Pour off the acid carefully and wash your silver thoroughly in distilled water. You will have 99% pure Silver. Melt and enjoy!
This is not a process you can do yourself at home. Silver items need to be sent to a professional refinery that has the industrial equipment and chemicals required to separate metal alloys. If you have a significant amount of silver to refine (several kilos or more) it may be worth findings a refinery and sending material in directly. Otherwise, small amounts are best handled through reputable jewelry stores or jewelry supply outfits.
For ANY substance, "pure" means complete, total, and without any other material added - i.e. 100%. The problem is that it's almost impossible to refine silver to be totally free of any other metals, but it IS practical to create what's called .999 fine silver. That means 999/1000 of the metal is pure silver and the remaining 1/10 of 1% is other metals or contaminants. For all practical purposes, that's pure silver.
Silver scrap is already refined silver.

Technically you can refine silver plate from metal items. However, silver plate by weight is a tiny fraction of a percent of the total item. It is rarely worth the expense of the refining process.

http://wiki.answers.com/How_can_you_tell_a_coin_is_not_pure_silverCirculationUS coins were never made of pure silver. Up through 1964, dimes, quarters, and halves were made of 90% silver with 10% copper added for hardness. In any case it's essentially impossible to refine silver to 100% purity. Even ultra-pure silver bullion "coins" have traces of other metals in them.

My teacher asked me to refine the wording in my composition in order to clarify my thesis statement. The processes used to refine oil can create volatile and dangerous chemicals.
