Important: If your radio/CD unit has a security code, make sure you know what it is before following the steps below so that you can reactivate the radio/CD unit after the battery is reconnected.
1. Remove windscreen wiper arms.
2. Remove rubber seal from firewall adjacent to the location of the battery.
3. Remove the water deflector that sits in front of the windscreen by removing the retaining screws.
4. You might also need to disconnect the windscreen washer hose.
5. Disconnect the -ve battery lead.
6. Disconnect the +ve battery lead.
7. Unscrew the retaining bolt and remove the clamp that holds the battery in place.
8. Lift the battery from the car.
Refit the battery by following the previous steps in reverse order, but make sure the doors are unlocked before reconnecting the battery (and that your car keys are not inside the car).
With a 12 volt battery charger. Red + connected to + post on battery. Black - connected to any metal part of the vehicle. You do not have to remove the battery from the vehicle.
Remove the lower panel from left fender .
Remove the ground cable. Remove the support arms that are in the way.Remove the positive cable. Take a ratchet,a 12" extension, and a 13mm socket and remove the holdown fixture located at the bottom of the battery. Install new battery. Reverse procedure. Done.
Remove any wiring from batteries, connect positive post of one battery to the negative post on the other battery. You now have a 12 volt battery system. Charge it with a 12 volt battery charger.
Remove it and hook it up to a battery charger. If you don't have a battery charger, you can take it to Autozone and they will charge it for free. Just be careful handling the battery because battery acid can cause serious injuries and damage to property.

Are you kidding ? OK, maybe you aren't. Take a 12 mm socket and put it on a 12 " extension and put a ratchet on that. Turn the ratchet to remove, not tighten. Righty tighty, lefty loosie. Takit and go down in front of the battery and loosen the bolt that holds the hold down tight. Loosen and unhook both battery terminals, positive and negative. Lift out battery.
The 1964 VW Beetle came from the factory with a 6 volt electrical system. Unless it has been upgraded to a 12 volt system you would need a 6 volt battery. I would recommend you check the voltage of the current battery with a volt meter. If there is no battery in the vehicle, just remove a light bulb and check the voltage written on the bulb.
