Remove fuel tank Remove fuel pick up and sender assembly.
supposedly there is a cover in the trunk that you can remove to access the top of the fuel tank to replace the fuel pump and sender
Can be found in a Cadillac shop manual. I'll tell you its located in the fuel tank. Necessary tt remove fuel and drop tank. Then remove fuel sender unit with special tool. Atteched to the sender is the fuel pump
If you lift up the boot carpet, there is a black disc with 3 retaining screws to the right of the boot. Unscrew these and remove the black cover plate. Underneath is the top of the fuel tank. The conector has four wires, two for the actuall fuel pump and two for the sender unit (This is for the fuel guage) This connector is plugged into the top of the fuel pump that sits in the tank, remove large plastic nut to remove fuel pump and sender unit.
The fuel gauge sending unit is located inside the fuel tank.
Obviously the tank has to be removed. 4 TIMES 13MM SOCKET BOLTS..REMOVE THEM This drops the tank down. Fuel filler and breather pipe(next to each other)..remove them. Then the fuel delivery/return pipes off the sender. and fuel gauge wire off the sender. pull the tank out and the sender just screws out. Money saved on repairs can then be wasted in the pub or betting shop...;)
LOCATE THE FUEL TANK IN QUESTION .i PERSONALLY LIKE TO REMOVE THE BED OF THE TRUCK TO ACCESS THE FUEL TANK TO MAKE THE PROCCESS EASIER. THEN REMOVE THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTION AND FUEL LINES THEN REMOVE THE RETAINING RING THEN THE SENDER.
remove fuel door, rubber boot, and then sender bolts at fuel fill. pull unit up and out. fuel pump is on the end of the pickup tube in tank.
Under the back seat there are two access panels to the tank. The fuel pump/sender unit is under the O/S panel and the other sender unit is under the N/S. You can tell the difference as the fuel pump and sender combined unit will have two electrical connectors. The solitary sender only has one and a fuel return pipe i think.

You remove it by undoing the big ribbed ring that surrounds it by gently tapping it round anticlockwise with a hammer and flatblade screwdriver if it will not undo by hand.
It could be a faulty unit or a disconnected connection (oxymoron?). I would need to know the car and year to give you specific instructions on how to go about checking the connection. You could remove the fuel tank to access the fuel sender. However if you remove the carpet in the boot there is a rectangular template marked on the floor. Cut this out and you can remove the fuel guage sender. Once the cause of the problem has been rectified, make up a hinge and fastner arrangement for future access.
