I recently had my rear struts changed, and my advice is to break down and pay the mechanic, my dad used to do almost all of my mechanic work, but he wouldn't touch the struts as they required special tools and a four wheel alignment after installation.
ANSWER
I changed the rear struts on my 1991 Lumina. It is relatively simple actually. You need to remove the rear tire then remove the two mounting bolts connected up by the top of the trunk. then compress the cylinder. After that you need a size 24 metric socket to remove where the strut is mounted behind the brake. After that, insert the new one and connect it behind the brake. Then attach the strut at the top. Be sure to install a new mounting kit when replaceing your struts. A new mounting kit will save a lot of wear and tear on the new struts. be sure to properly torque down the mounting bolts.

If you're considering replacement or repairs, you'll need to look for rear shock absorbers specifically designed for that model.

To replace the rear struts on a 1991 Oldsmobile 98, start by safely lifting the rear of the vehicle and securing it on jack stands. Remove the rear wheels, then unbolt the lower strut mount and the upper strut bolts from the inside of the trunk. Once the old struts are removed, install the new struts by reversing the process, ensuring all bolts are torqued to the manufacturer's specifications before reattaching the wheels and lowering the vehicle. Always check for proper alignment and functionality after completing the installation.
