To take the shift lever off the steering column, you'll need to tap out the switch actuator pivot pin from the steering column housing. Once the pin is removed, the lever will slide out, but make sure the spring inside the housing that puts tension on the lever isn't lost or displaced.
To reinstall, you'll need a thin metal shim to press the spring down in order to be able to reinsert the shift lever & pin.
Turn the knob counter clockwise and it unscrews off.
First the bezel/shift assembly trim should be removed or put aside. This will allow access to the shift column to be unbolted from its housing.Ê

You will have to remove the transmission pan that is on the bottom of the transmission to drain the fluid.
The center of knob...the part you press down when changing gears, is removable. Pull up on it gently with a small screwdriver etc. When it's off, there is a snap ring to remove. You can now remove the knob.
