Usually they are the page file, so turning off virtual memory removes them.
My ASUS EE was sluggish after a few months so I went to defrag the C: Drive.
even though it had 20% space.
It was cluttered with hundreds of unmovable files shown in green. The white
space was scattered in thin sections.A defrag
made no difference.
A search found some information but nothing complete. It did say it was
probably pagefiles scattered by the system. I noticed. 1. My page file was
on the system drive (C). 2. It was ten times the system recommended value.
My answer was>
>Control Panel
>System Properties
>Advanced Tab
>Performance Settings
>Virtual Memory
>Click on Drive C and set it to 'No Page File' (Some of the fixes say that
>it should not be on the system drive which makes sense as that is where the
>intense activity takes place.
>Click on Drive D and set it to system managed size.
>Click on SET button
(It will tell you the computer needs to be restarted and I think it then did
so by default.)
When it had restarted I did a defrag on C: and all is lovely and also my
free space on C: had doubled from 20% to over 40%
Edit: I forgot to say I am using XP.
They are ignored during the defrag.
Provable
To remove files that appear to be unmovable, you need to close the program that is using that file. If this does not work, the only way to remove the file is to boot into safe mode using the F8 key and then go to the location of the file and remove it. By booting into safe mode, you bypass anything that could be using the file.
cCleaner is a good program to remove cache files along with other temporary files and invalid registry keys.
