They're very cheap-you just replace it. They are usually less than 5.00. Location should be in goose-neck attached to upper rad hose or water pump. Double check location for your engine then it's just a matter of removing pump or gooseneck, setting thermo on block (make sure is the right way-usually spring side down) & then reattaching pump/goose-neck using a new gasket(s) & some blue sealer.
You may have to get gaskets separate, but they're cheap. Ive seen them come with & without. If it's behind pump, accessories have to come off which is time consuming, but if it is in goose-neck is a very easy job. Before you mess with it, make sure it needs replaced. You can squeeze upper hose & feel increased flow when it opens after engine warms up. you can also see it open if you put it in a pan of water & boil it on your stove. They are usually rated in degrees-160, 180 etc. You can go down, but don't go up from standard on temp if you do get a generic, 180 is the ave.
