Hello,
You're in for quite a bit of labor so be prepared to get down and dirty for a couple hours. You will need to access the starter from both the top and bottom of the car.
First, jack the car up and remove the driver side wheel (LHD).
Remove the air cleaner and hoses assembly.
Disconnect battery and tray and set aside.
Begin removing the exhaust manifold cover and exhaust manifold. Here, I loosened the bolts but left it connected. It will be removed at a later time.
The down-pipe needs to be removed. Start from the lower portion of the down pipe and remove the bolts at the head of the cat-converter. Good luck cause these bolts are severely in bad shape so torch it and get them off by whatever useful means necessary. Then the retainer clip for the down pipe needs to slip off its bracket. And, the hardest bolts to get to are the 12 mm bolts at the very upper portion of the down pipe. Use deep socket 3/8 drive 12 mm. The clearance for the sockets themselves are so tight so be patient and take your time. You will need a foot long extension bar.
Once the down pipe is removed, the header comes off easily. You now can see the starter in all its glory. Check the cable connections and see if anything is awry. If the cables are worn or loosely connected, the starter might still be okay.
To remove the starter, remove the wire harness and positive cable connected to the starter. Then, the two 14 mm bolts hold it against the transmission are wedged right up against the firewall. I loosened the top then the bottom, and supported the weight and removed the bolts with my fingers.
Good luck and be safe.
I live in Austin,Tx and it is costing me $403.16 to have the starter replaced in my 2003 corolla.
Replacing a starter on a 1989 Toyota Corolla is not very difficult to do. The wires will need to be disconnected from the old starter and labeled or taped. The starter is held in place by two bolts, unscrew the bolts and remove the old starter. Then replace with the new starter.
Same as a 1999. Look for "remove starter on 1999 Corola" post I answered. Same as a 1999. Look for "remove starter on 1999 Corolla" post I answered.
