When an anti theft system light comes on while driving a 98 Chevy Malibu, the problem is usually caused by the Security Module. The security module is part of the Ignition Lock Module.

Its on the top of the engine at the right front... coils and ignition module are together. Follow the plug wires, away from the spark plugs, where they will connect into the coil pack. The ignition module is sandwiched under the coil pack. To remove either... remove the three nuts under the ignition module and the six torx screws on top of the coil pack.... voila. After market new modules (10/2010) cost $98-134 at Carquest Auto Parts. OEM Delco module cost New from B&B Auto parts $ 360 Good Luck

You didn't say what year but if it is a 98 the problem may be one of the coils is bad or the ingition control module may be bad. You could switch the two coils and see if 2 and 3 now have spark and 1 and 4 don't. If so replace the bad coil. If no change replace the ignition control module.
A dealer can look up the ignition codes to make a key if one needs to be replaced on a 1992 Olds 98. A locksmith can also help but the ignition cylinder has to be removed.

Yes ANSWER No - a 1998 3.0 L Ford Ranger does not have a distributor which would allow you to adjust the ignition timing - it has a coil pack and the ignition timing is controlled by the PCM ( powertrain control module )
Go to the junkyard and ask them for the part you need and have them look it up in the hollander book to see what other cars that have the same part that will fit your malibu.
There is no dis. cap. GM uses a ignition module and coil pack that sits on top of module. Quad 4 eng. is basicly the same, just a different configuration.
