First the fuel filter is not located in the engine compartment as one might believe. Look under the car, towards the rear passenger door, along the side of the undercarriage. It will look like a can of peaches without the label. It will have one line going in and out of each end. Unhook the lines (These can be tricky)and simply replace the fuel filter. To check to see if it is good or bad, try blowing through the filter (after letting the gas drain out). If you can blow through it, it is NOT bad. Good luck
