I don't know the answer but any glove box lock is a joke. I would just replace it but never lock it.
First, unlock and open the glove box if possible<*>. Next, look at the back side of the lock the are two diagonal screws holding the lock assembly to the glove box door, remove the screws/bolts on the lock and remove lock assembly. <*>If you cannot open your glove box beforehand u will need a flat head screw driver to pry it open.
I purchased a used 1999 Chevy Malibu and had to replace the glove box because the latch was broken. I purchased another a the local salvage yard and I want to know how to take the lock out of the old door and install it in the new one.
Behind the right side of glove box, you have to remove kick panel on bottom a dashboard and flip glove box out to view and replace.
If the glove box will not stay shut, look at the lock mechanism, the hinge and the latch. If either of these is bent, broken or loose, replace it. These are the most common causes.
Yes, the glove box opens manually only when the key is inserted in the ignition. When you lock your car with remote you can observe the glove box key locking. So, when you lock your car, the glove box is also locked.
