Most of the times , you have to remove the carpet holders on the area where the light is located or(depending on model of car)remove the whole assembly of the brake light. Then you find the bulb that is not working, twist the holder, take it out, and make sure you buy the same type bulb(some have two connectors on the socket, some have just one, don't mix them up).
