This is easy, never change hot !!!! you will be burned!!! Follow the lagre hose at the top of your radiator, you will come to where it ends at a domed shaped connector. This is the housing. remove the hose then take out the 2 bolts on the housing. Take out the thermostat and inspect for missing pasts. clean the old seal off of the head and housing, replace the thermostat and seal. make sure you do not put in the new one upside down, look at the old one when removing. Put the hose back on and check fluid levels, replace if needed.
follow the top radiator hose to the engine, remove it then remove the thermostat housing, remove the thermostat and replace it

1996 3.1 litre ThermostatThe thermostat on a 3.1 litre is located under the throttle body where it connects to the intake manifold. I found it was easier to remove the throttle body when replacing the thermostat. You first have to remove the throttle cable bracket that is mounted on the throttle body. After that you will be able to see the thermostat housing. The bottom hole on the thermostat housing is slotted so you don't have to completely have to remove it. Good luck!
Depends on what size engine you have, and what year of Grand Am you have. Mine is a 1996 with a 2.4L engine. So my thermostat is located in the bottom radiator hose, where it goes into the water pump.
