This answer pertains to a 1998 Toyota Camry with a four cylinder engine. Purchase the thermostat from a autoparts shop.
The thermostat housing is located on the front right side of the engine. Your left when you are looking at the engine. A radiator hose will be connected to the thermostat housing. The housing is held in place against the engine with two 10mm nuts.
Use a 1/4" or 3/8" nut driver or a ratchet with a 3 inch extension and a 10mm socket for the easiest disassembly and reassembly.
Allow the car engine to cool. If you do not know how to drain engine coolant from your radiator, you can place an oil drain pan under the engine in line with the thermostat housing. This should catch most of the engine coolant that drains from the system when the thermostat housing is removed.
Loosen and remove the two 10mm nuts.
Pull the thermostat housing backwards off of the two bolt studs and remove the thermostat. Pay attention to how the old thermostat is facing. The spring end should face the engine.
Place the new o-ring gasket around the thin metal bonnet of the new gasket. You will notice that the o-ring gasket is split on the inside diameter of the gasket. Make sure the metal bonnet goes into the split all around the gasket.
Holding the spring end of the thermostat, gently twist the thermostat and gasket until it seats into the thermostat housing. Wetting the o-ring with engine coolant will help.
Holding the thermostat housing and making sure the thermostat does not fall out of the housting, place the housing back over the two bolt studs and push the housing against the engine.
Holding the thermostat housing in place, use your free hand to place the two 10mm nuts back on the bolt studs.
Tighten the 10mm nuts evenly. Do not tighten one all the way and then the other. Snug up one nut, then the other and repeat until they are tight.
Fill the radiator resovoir with new engine coolant to the full mark. Remove the radiator cap and slowly fill the radiator new coolant until it is full. Replace the radiator cap.
Remove and dispose of the engine coolant in the oil pan.
Start the car motor. Allow the engine to warm up and check for leaks around the thermostat housing. Tighten the nuts if you note a coolant leak. Tighten each nut evenly.
Watch the temperature gauge in the dash to make sure the engine is not showing signs of over heating.
Turn the heat on in the car. You can feel the radiator hose to make sure it is hot. It should be. This is an indication that the water pump is circulating the hot coolant through the thermostat and into the radiator.
Check for leaks again after the engine has cooled. If there are no leaks, congtratulations, you were sucessful! This answer pertains to a 1998 Toyota Camry with a four cylinder engine. Purchase the thermostat from a autoparts shop.
